Buy a Boat...

Boating is becoming increasingly popular for many people and for very many different reasons. Whether you yearn for thrills and excitement and hanker after a high speed sports boat or rib, perhaps you would like to charter a yacht whilst on holiday and bask in the Mediterranean sun or you are just happy to enjoy cruising up the Thames through the locks and stopping off at a country pub for lunch: the options are endless.

Boats are often purchases of the heart but that doesn't mean you can't be logical and considered in many of the choices you make. Probably the most important place to begin is with your budget. Think carefully about how you plan to use your boat and if it will suit you and your family.

  • Remembering that factors such as berthing, insurance, maintenance, equipment and training are in addition to the cost of the boat itself.

  • When searching for your boat, you should use a reputable boat builder or brokerage who is ideally a member of the British Marine Federation.

  • Make sure you know exactly whats included in the price and most importantly if there's a warranty.

  • If you are using a marine finance company check who will be responsible for the boat registrations and if the company requires their name to be attached to the insurance policy documents.

  • If necesssary ensure that a professional surveyor checks the quality of workmanship and specification for a new build craft.

  • You may be buying a second hand boat so it's advisable to make your offer subject to a sea trial and the findings of any survey.

  • Ensure that clear title to the boat is guaranteed and that there is no outstanding finance agreement.

  • Take a careful look at the paintwork, signs of rust or corrosion, operation of engine and equipment, upholstery, equipment inventory and anything that gives an indication of possible problems.

  • As a boat owner it’s your responsibility to have all the necessary safety equipment including navigation lights and insurance!

If you need t find out more why not visit your local motor yacht club and chat to the members: boat owners are usually very friendly and happy to tell you about their experiences. You’ll probably find out some interesting points that will help you decide whether to proceed down the motor or sail boat route and if you’re lucky you may be invited to cruise along the river!
